South End description by the Boston Traveler sparks a demonstration.

November 30, 1949

Responding to a recent series of articles in the newspaper calling the neighborhood “Skid Row,” some 1,000 residents, the men dressed in suits and ties and the women in dresses and hat, attend a meeting at the Williams Municipal Building. One of the attendees tells the newspaper, “We made it clear that we resent being used as a dumping ground . . . Such a condition would not be tolerated in other communities.”
